Inner Work: Stuck in a Victim Mentality

Every day we experience positive or negative situations either directly or indirectly. It is how we decide to react in the negative situations that determines if we are stuck in a victim mentality. A victim mentality is when we “constantly blame other people or situations for the things that happen”[1] to us. Instead of asking why this happened and what lesson there was to learn, this evaluation process becomes blocked. This is a heavy burden that creates mistrust and negative energy and it can be detrimental to our health and relationships. It also keeps us from learning how we could react more appropriately in similar situations. So, how do we break this cycle?
We need to focus on our inner work and practice forgiveness. This can help us to rebuild our trust in others and teach us to respond positively when we are experiencing negative situations. We can also heal past traumas and learn to recognize our emotional triggers. This will help us learn how to respond with confidence when we become triggered. If we can accept responsibility for our actions and acknowledge that blaming others is preventing us from finding happiness, then we have learned how to break the cycle. We can now move closer to a place of love, joy and peace.
If we continue to do our inner work, we can learn to love ourselves and know that the more we do, the more love will be returned to us. The universe returns that love by enabling us to work and live alongside one another, be in accord with one another and enjoy abundance. Our higher self or wisdom of knowing understands this and will serve us in a way that is meant for us to experience. All that is required is patience, tenacity, trust, courage and love.
